What Is Layering?

Fragrance layering is the practice of wearing two or more scents simultaneously to create a personalised olfactory signature. Unlike a single composition, which is the work of a single perfumer, a layered scent is yours alone - a collaboration between the Maison and the wearer.

Traditional Indian perfumery has long understood this principle. Attars are rarely worn alone in the Subcontinent; they are stacked, combined, and balanced according to season, mood, and occasion. Sugandh Ink compositions are designed with layering in mind - each formulation has a clear structural role that allows it to harmonise with others.

When done correctly, layering does not produce a muddled blend but a third scent - more complex and more personal than any single bottle.

Principles

The Golden Rules

Layering follows the same structural logic that governs single fragrances: a foundation, a heart, and a lift. The key is respecting the weight and volatility of each ingredient.

Base First

Apply the heaviest, longest-lasting composition first - a deep attar or extrait. This anchors the entire structure. Oud, Amber, and Leather compositions form the foundation. They provide the silhouette of the scent; everything else is detail.

Heart as Bridge

Layer a middle-weight composition over the base to link foundation with lift. Floral and spice compositions work beautifully here. They are the narrative - the story the fragrance tells. They soften the base while providing a transition to the top.

Top as Signature

The lightest, most volatile layer goes last - and often on pulse points only. Fresh, citrus, or green compositions provide the opening impression. This is the handshake of the scent: what people notice first. It evaporates fastest, revealing the layers beneath.

Heat and humidity amplify fragrance. The goal is freshness without sharpness and longevity without heaviness.
